Middle School
Welcome
On behalf of the St. John’s Middle School faculty and staff it is truly my pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to you as we begin the 2010-2011 school year. September is the time of year to reconnect with old friends and welcome new friends. To those students and parents who are new to St. John’s we extend a warm welcome and best wishes for an exciting and productive year in your new school. We hope that you will quickly feel at home and become involved in the activities of our school. The Middle School has a staff of dedicated and gifted teachers who understand and thoroughly enjoy middle school students. The middle school years are the most exciting and challenging for young adolescents as they develop core social, emotional, physical, moral, psychological and intellectual skills. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students crave a learning culture where they can express their unique talents, search for belonging, make contributions to their community and nurture life skills. It is the role of the middle school to fulfill these needs, providing active, engaging, personalized and challenging learning experiences in a supportive and safe environment. A key to our success will be the collaboration of parents, faculty, staff and students. Together, we will contribute to each child’s learning journey at St. John’s Middle School.
I would also like to welcome you to the SJES Middle School web page. Our website goal is to enhance communication among teachers, students, parents, administrators and members of our community. Announcements, achievements, important dates, field trip information, flyers, forms, letters, academic calendars, permission slips and the like will all be available on our web site. You will find our Middle School Announcemnets linked through the SJES Buzz. Please be sure to read your Monday email every week as this is how all the information will be coming to you. Grade level academic calendars are also available on our web page. They are updated throughout the month so please be sure to check them frequently.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Cindy Campbell

New Beginnings
Quote
Every day is a new beginning, treat it that way. Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be. – Marsha Petri
The first days of school can be both exciting and scary. You may have gotten up the first few mornings feeling a little apprehensive. Maybe you wondered, “Are my classes going to be hard this year?” “Will I like my teachers?” Well, guess what. The person sitting next to you and the teacher at the front of the classroom probably had some of the same thoughts and feelings you did. So let’s be especially kind to each other as we settle into a new school year. Famous golfer Hale Irwin once said, “If you’re not just a little bit nervous before a match, you probably don’t have the expectations of yourself that you should have.” Maybe some of your nervousness is because you’ve set some great expectations for this school year. Hopefully, you’re expecting yourself to make better grades, meet new friends, or get more involved with extracurricular activities. And if that’s the case, then remember this: with great expectations you can make it a great school year!

Who We Are
Welcome to the middle school program at St. John's Episcopal School. The academic program emphasizes the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and study skills in a structured classroom setting. Students are encouraged to be active learners through individualized assignments, group projects, experiential and service learning, and interdisciplinary exploration, all designed to foster development for academic discipline and classroom cooperation. Students are provided opportunities to interact with a variety of technology tools and resources in order to prepare them for participation in an information-rich society.
A sense of community is important to the middle school program. This sense of community is designed to develop respect for the differences and uniqueness of each individual while developing a sense of responsibility towards themselves, their classmates, and the School community. Our students thrive through their participation in academic, athletic, artistic, and leadership programs. Small class sizes raise academic expectations for each student, while our enrichment classes ensure a well-rounded program.
