After months of tirelessly practicing, the 27-member St. John’s Epsicopal Middle School choir joined voices with choruses and soloists from around the country. They were accompanied by the New England Symphonic Ensemble to perform John Rutter’s Mass of the Children on stage at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
The Memorial Day weekend performance was lead by Rutter, a highly esteemed choral composer, musician and educator. With Rutter personally leading the choir, students understood the magnitude of this opportunity. “I felt I was in the presence of a genius!”, expresses 8th Grader Erica Jackson. The sentiment was not lost just on the students. “It is such a thrill to share this opportunity with these young singers. I am proud of the work they did to prepare to sing his master work and I am both grateful and excited to be able to sing alongside these amazing students,” states Lori Speciale, St. John’s choir director.
The St. John’s Middle School Choir received an invitation through the Festival Singers, a local choral group, to participate in this annual event. Each month the Festival Singers would join the choir to practice the moving work of Rutter’s score. Speciale shares, “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Gary Toops, Artistic Director of the Festival Singers, and for St. John’s for supporting the arts in such a magnificent way. This will truly be a memory that we all will cherish.”
During this once-in-a-lifetime experience, St. John’s Middle School students took to the streets to explore New York City. They went to visit each deli to see which one was their overall favorite, and went to visit iconic New York highlights like FAO Schwartz, Central Park, and the view from atop the Empire State Building. While the students were fascinated by the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps, the thrill of performing on stage at Carnegie Hall topped it all. Monica Read, Assistant Middle School Principal, relates, “This trip opened their eyes in a whole new way and took their singing and performance to a whole new level!”

A few tips to prepare your child for the ERB standardized tests this week:
See that your child gets his/her regular amount of sleep before the tests and is well-rested.
Resist the temptation to review academics. Lay out clothes and lunches for the next day, and use the night before to create early and stress free bedtime.
Help your child mentally prepare for the tests by being sensitive to your child’s anxiety. Talking about the test may cause added anxiety so think of ways to diffuse the anxiety.
Make sure that your child eats his/her usual breakfast on the day of the test. Hunger can detract from a good test performance.
Encourage your child to listen carefully to all test-taking directions given by the teacher and to ask questions about any directions that are unclear.
Encourage your child to do his/her best.
Because standardized testing can sometimes go on for as long as a week, build in physical activity and downtime throughout the test-taking period.
ST. JOHN’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL’S DINNER AUCTION IS RECORD-BREAKING SUCCESS
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA – St. John's Episcopal School held its 16th annual Dinner Auction, Cardinella, on April 24, 2010, at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. “Growing Strong Minds” was the theme of the evening with nearly 250 parents, faculty, and friends of St. John’s in attendance. Cardinella 2010 featured spirited silent and live auctions, opportunity drawings, dinner and dancing, and raised over $200,000 – a record breaking amount for the School’s programs.
The highly-anticipated evening was lead by event chairs, Jody Dennis of Rancho Santa Margarita and Marsi Wolder of Coto de Caza along with auction chairs Keri Doyle of Coto De Caza and Elizabeth Hall of Ladera Ranch. Silent auction bidding on over 100 beautifully-wrapped baskets with everything from sports tickets to family adventures started off the event. The excitement picked up when the live auction began after dinner. Guests bid on a VIP experience at the Staples Center, a luxurious Whistler getaway, and always the most coveted item, reserved parking spaces in front of the School.
The evening was highlighted by a moving introduction of the Parent Gift pledge by parent, Bob Dochterman. He reminded the audience of the special programs and activities that set St. John’s apart. His heartfelt presentation motivated numerous parents to contribute and helped make Cardinella 2010 a success from start to finish.
