The Middle Division

St. John's recognizes that the "middle years" is a period of tremendous growth and opportunity for adolescents, and that all student experiences are unique. The St. John's Middle Division provides a safe and nurturing environment for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, preparing them for great success in high school and beyond. Students learn in technology rich, state-of-the-art spaces, optimized for an unparalleled academic experience. Through close personal attention, collaboration with peers, and a focus on individual learning styles, our highly qualified and award-winning faculty meet each child's social-emotional needs in age-appropriate ways. In addition, the St. John's Middle Division experience allows students to exercise choice in their schedules, purposefully exposing them to enrichments and experiences beyond the core curriculum.

Close Personal Attention

We are intentional with our sizing in the Middle Division. Our small student to teacher ratio, coupled with our advisory program allows us to support and know every student as they are. The St. John’s Middle Advisory Program fosters connectedness between students, faculty, and families. Each advisor serves as the primary advocate for his or her advisees through regular small group meetings that promote community and allow for open communication. Building on the close personal attention that our students already receive, advisors provide an additional level of support to nurture their advisees’ academic, social, and emotional progress during the school year.

Access to Choice

Our Middle Division parents and students tell us that they value the variety of athletic, arts, club, and elective offerings. In addition to the required core classes, Middle Division students select a Performing Art Elective (Band, Choir, Dance, or Drama) one Club, and one Elective that rotate per trimester. Students choose from Study Hall, World Drumming, PALS, Student Council, Robotics, Makers, and TV Production to name a few. Students can also participate in after school athletics, clubs, and the musical.

Preparation for High School

Once you step foot in to our Middle Division, you will notice that it is a learning environment unlike any other. Our classrooms are learning spaces that engage our students beyond the teacher and the textbook. These technology rich spaces are built for instruction, collaboration, projects, and critical thinking. The Middle Division students have a rotating schedule that combines core curriculum: English, History, Math, Science, World Language (Spanish or Mandarin), and a robust enrichment offering. It is through the unique Middle Division experience that our students find that they are prepared and finding success in High School and beyond.

Curriculum

The St. John’s Middle Division curriculum prepares students for the demands of highly selective local and regional high schools, and so it is appropriately challenging. Each Middle Division student takes eight periods of classes every day. In addition to enrichment classes, which are specific to each grade level, and a world language (Mandarin or Spanish) or Learning Resource class, all students take required courses in the basic disciplines. As part of our STEAM approach to teaching and learning, all students also select a Performing Arts elective, electives, and clubs.

Middle Division Math CurriculumAt St. John’s Episcopal School, our mathematics program bridges the transition from foundational elementary math to advanced high school coursework while nurturing confident problem solvers who think critically and apply math to real-world situations. Using HMH Into Math as our core curriculum, students build strong conceptual understanding, mathematical fluency, and meaningful reasoning skills.

We offer diverse learning pathways to support and challenge all learners. Through differentiated instruction, small-group support, enrichment opportunities, and accelerated placement options, every student is met at their level and guided toward growth. Course offerings range from pre-algebra preparation through Algebra 1 and Geometry (high school–equivalent), providing advancement opportunities for students ready for additional challenge.

Grounded in collaboration, inquiry, and real-world application, our program encourages students to explore multiple strategies, communicate their thinking, and develop perseverance in problem solving, which are skills essential for success in the classroom and beyond.
